The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a mid-sized, wide-body, twin-engine jet airliner designed to be more efficient than any other current airliner in its class. It is also the first major airliner to use composite materials for the majority of its construction.
Initially designated 7E7, early concept images of the 787 included rakish cockpit windows, a dropped nose and a distinctive "shark-fin" vertical stabilizer. The final styling of the aircraft was more conservative, the fin appearing visually similar to those of aircraft currently in service. The nose and cockpit windows were also changed to a more conventional form.
Boeing held a roll out ceremony for the 787 on July 8, 2007, at it assembly factory in Everett, Washington, USA. The first flight for the 787 is scheduled for late 2008 and is currently scheduled to enter into service in early 2009. Since the airplane was first offered for sale in 2003 it has become the fastest selling airliner in history with over 800 orders placed by January 2008.
